Happy Turkey Day

The National Football League(NFL) has released part of the 2009 season which includes Opening Weekend and Thanksgiving, both include the greatest team ever in sports, The Green Bay Packers.
I just teasing although I am a stockholder, but I'm just a humble fan.
I did notice that the remaining schedule for Turkey day which includes the tradtional Packers/Lions matchup then we get the spectacular match up of the Raiders at the Cowboys before the NFL Network finale of Giants at Broncos.
That means matchups of 5 of 6 teams that did not make the playoffs last year, a team that didn't win a game and the FRIGGIN RAIDERS!
What's the deal. Does the NFL actually want us to spend time with our familes on this holiday?
I almost would rather work and get Black Friday started.
Not really.

Where is the 1/2 Yard Line?

I'm getting real tired of really good, professional announcers(Greg Gumbel, Al Michaels, Brent Musburger) saying the ball is on the 1/2 yard line.

There is no 1/2 yard line!

If so, show me a picture.

The field is measured and marked in yards!

Just a thought.

One Sport Down - One Going Down in Flames!

Thank you National Hockey League(NHL), for finally doing the right thing and doing what you had planned to do all along. Cancel your season. In case you hadn't noticed there hasn't been any hockey this year. Did you miss it? No, neither did I. Two reasons, one there is still hockey in my town (ON Wisconsin! GO Badgers!) if I wanted to see it, and two I've been following English Football, which is pretty much like hockey, just played on a bigger field, with more players, no ice, no sticks, just as much scoring, better fans sitting in the stands drinking beer and singing songs, and players getting red carded (kicked out of the game) for nailing a guy in the back of the head (just like they do in Hockey!). So there is nothing to miss. So long NHL, you're not missed and even if you come back no one will notice.
Next up:Juiceball-- I'm sorry, I mean Baseball.
Baseball isn't going away, but with the steroids controversy, and all the talk shows, interviews, opinions, Sportcenters, and Behind the Lines, you may not even know the games are being played!
For the record, the controversy isn't that some star players were taking steroids and in the process some long standing records were or will be broken. It's the culture of the whole league that has allowed a player using steroids to flourish. With two expansions, moving a crappy American League team making them a crappy National League team, and at least 16 new stadiums, with the exception of Seattle all seeing increases in home runs. A player in these conditions shouldn't need steroids to hit 30 or more home runs, but why settle for 30 or 35 when with a little juice you can hit 50 or 60, get more bucks ($$$) and more babes! Should be a fun season. And who knows maybe the games will be good too.

It's a Tragedy!

Originally posted on "The Radioaffliction" on 2/4/05

The grogginess of waking up this morning was shaken off by my favorite sin of ESPN when the anchor announced that New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady suffered a "personal tragedy" in preparation of The Super Bowl with the death of his grandmother at age 94! I repeat AGE 94!!!
Folks that's an accomplishment, not a tragedy! Sure it's a bummer, and there's a time of reflection, and grief, but I'm sure Tom will be okay. But how does the Mighty ESPN and other reporters share his grief, by shoving a bunch of microphones in his face and demanding a comment. Hello, what do think he's going to say. The only reason I can think of people wanting to know this, is if he went out on a limb and went nuts and said, "It's about time the old bag went, my mother has been waiting for her inheritance for years, now I can count the days until she goes!"
No, that's not going to happen so leave it alone. My disdain of this kind of reporting goes back to when John Lennon was killed, and somebody found Paul McCartney and asked him how he felt. Paul looked at him, and you can tell he's holding it all in, and said "Yeah, it's kind of a bummer isn't it!" Now looking at the words it sounds kind of vain, but Paul looked at the reporter and saying with his expression, "How could this Mother$%&*# ask me this right now!" That was a tragedy, here's another one, A Rural Wisconsin man kills his wife, very young daughter and teenage step-son, because GOD asked him to bring his family to heaven! Once again forgetting about the loosely translated fifth commandment of "Thou Shall Not Kill", and also I think someone famous said "Thou Shall Not Be Lead Into Temptation", and I'm only assuming that includes God. I maybe going to extremes but ESPN should choose their words a little more carefully when trying to fill in the blanks and make a story while we're still waiting for this "Game" to start.

Weekend Sports and Announcer Heaven?

Originally posted on "The Radioaffliction" on 9/25/04

What would the weekend be without sports, and one of the ways I prepare for my Sunday football, is looking at the Friday USA TODAY and going over the football previews and seeing what games get which announcers. This is very important, almost as important as the game itself. Now in my case for the Packers game, we will have the #1 team from FOX of Joe Buck, Chris Collinsworth, and Troy Aikman. The importance of this is, this should be a game between two good teams, The Packers and the Colts. However if things happen to go wrong in my case, at least there is good announcers to enjoy. Having a bad game and bad announcers is like a double whammy, unless you know ahead of time the game is going to be bad(another reason why I look at the previews). The point I'm really trying to get at here, is that the announcers should fit the matchup. In this example FOX did a good job.
CBS is been having a tougher time with their #1 crew of Jim Nantz,Phil Simms and Bonnie Bernstein(Please Marry Me). Last week they had the Cleveland Browns at the Dallas Cowboys. Not saying these are bad teams, it's just not a marquee match up for a talented crew, and quite frankly it was a horrible game. This week the #1 crew gets those same Browns again at the New York Giants!?! So I'm left to ask why this is the #1 game of the week for CBS!!!!!!
I went through my little preview on the USA TODAY and found four games that were better match ups and better for the sanity of poor Mr.Nantz, Simms and Ms. Bernstein(meet me in Vegas). Even the match up of (0-2)Houston and (0-2)Kansas City is better, San Diego at Denver, Baltimore at Cincinnati(although this is almost even with Browns/Giants) and HELLO Jacksonville (2-0) at Tennessee (1-1)!!!!! A division rival and possible playoff match up. So by CBS thinking, the Browns/Giants is a possible Super Bowl match up???????
